Faculty Training

To ensure that faculty and support staff are prepared for a transition to Canvas, a variety of professional development options are available.

Online Faculty Starter Kit
This self-paced Faculty Starter Kit is designed to familiarize faculty with the need-to-know tools and features of Canvas and prepare you for course design and delivery. This course highlights multiple ways you can leverage Canvas to design, deliver, and manage your course effectively. You can login now to access the course within Canvas.

In-person Workshops
Recordings from Canvas Week Training Sessions held during the week of October 30th are available in the Faculty Starter Kit.

Ongoing in-person sessions are available throughout the semesters to prepare faculty for a transitioning to Canvas. These workshops cover a variety of Canvas features, best practices, and practical application of tools. The sessions are designed to help you understand how to use the Canvas LMS and are available in both MMC and BBC.

Upcoming Sessions:

Custom Workshops
Academic departments may request a custom Canvas training for their faculty focused on their courses and discipline. A minimum of ten (10) faculty are required for a custom workshop. We can schedule your department training in one of the Division of IT training labs or bring the workshop to a lab managed by the academic unit in their own building.

Contacts for requesting a custom workshop are Dr. Mary Haley or Mariel Romero Guerra in Educational Technology Services at 305-348-2814.

Canvas Coaching
Canvas Coaches (from Instructure) will visit FIU during the week of November 27th - December 8th to guide you through migrating, designing, and developing your course and prepare you for the transition to Canvas. If you are teaching in Canvas this upcoming Spring 2018 semester and would like to sign up for a coaching session, instructions are available on how to do so through Canvas.

We will offer the Canvas Coaching service to faculty transitioning to Canvas for the Summer 2018 semester as well. You can expect more information on scheduling and Canvas Coach availability as the semester nears.

Student Training

A few options are available for students to get familiar with Canvas, informed about the additional support being offered, and prepared for the transition.

Not sure if your course is on Blackboard or Canvas for the Spring 2018 semester? Navigate to and select “Find out now.” This will show you which Learning Management System (LMS) each of your registered courses are in. Note that not all face-to-face courses have an online component and may not be using the LMS.

Student Introduction Sessions
If you were unable to attend the live Student Introduction Sessions for Canvas during January, you may watch a recording of a session.

Canvas Student Starter Kit
All students with a Canvas course during Spring 2018 will have access to the Canvas Student Starter Kit (found in Canvas) within 24 hours of registering for a Canvas course. This self-paced course familiarizes students with information about Canvas navigation, layout, and assignment and assessment completion. Although this course is not required, it is highly recommended. Students with a Spring 2018 course in Canvas can go to to login and access the course.
